How to Help Children Sleep Better During Hot Summer Nights
When the weather turns warmer, getting a good night's sleep can become more difficult for our children. Bedrooms that feel comfortable in spring can quickly become stuffy during a heatwave. This makes children restless and uncomfortable so they're more likely to wake up throughout the night. Although we adults can struggle with hot weather too, children can find it particularly challenging because they're still developing healthy sleep patterns so they're more sensitive to changes in their sleeping environment.
Why Hot Weather Affects Children's Sleep
Sleep naturally causes the body's core temperature to drop slightly. This cooling process signals to the brain that it's time to rest. If your child's bedroom is too warm, their body has to work harder to regulate its temperature. This makes it harder for them to fall asleep and stay asleep. Although every child is different, creating a cooler sleeping environment is one of the most effective ways to support better sleep during the summer months.
How to Choose Suitable Bedding
One of the easiest places to start is with your child's bedding. Heavy duvets and thick blankets that feel cosy in winter are just too heavy for the warmer months.
We recommend choosing lighter bedding options when we've got warmer weather. Natural materials such as cotton are breathable and allow air to circulate more freely around your child's body. Lightweight sheets and duvet covers help prevent heat from becoming trapped throughout the night, keeping your child cool.
You should also consider the mattress itself, as some mattresses retain more heat than others, whereas breathable designs help improve airflow and temperature regulation. Choosing a mattress suited to your child's sleeping environment can help create a more comfortable sleeping surface throughout the year.
Keep Bedrooms Cool During the Day
Many parents focus on cooling the bedroom at bedtime, but managing the room temperature throughout the day can be equally important. Closing curtains or blinds during sunny periods reduces the amount of heat entering the room. If you've got south-facing bedrooms, they're particularly prone to being significantly warmer than other areas of the house.
Open windows during the cooler morning and evening hours to improve airflow. Creating a cross-breeze by opening windows on opposite sides of your home can encourage fresh air to circulate more effectively.
Dress Children Appropriately for Sleep
Children do not need to be wrapped up heavily simply because they are going to bed. During hot weather, lightweight sleepwear is often the better choice. Breathable cotton pyjamas help keep children cool and comfortable. On particularly warm nights, your younger children might sleep more comfortably in minimal sleepwear.
Always consider the room temperature rather than following the same bedtime clothing routine you use during the colder months.
Maintain a consistent bedtime routine
Although hot weather can disrupt sleep, it's still important to maintain familiar bedtime routines. A predictable routine helps children recognise when it's time to wind down. Activities such as a cool bath, reading together or quiet conversation can help create a sense of calm before bed.
Avoid energetic play, screens and stimulating activities close to bedtime, as these can make it harder for your children to relax when they are already feeling warm. It's even more important to be consistent during periods when sleep is naturally more difficult.
Mattress Comfort is Important
As parents, we can be prone to focus exclusively on bedding when trying to improve summer sleep for our children, but the mattress plays an important role, too. A mattress that provides appropriate support whilst also allowing air to circulate creates a more comfortable sleep environment. Some mattresses include breathable materials that improve airflow and reduce heat retention.
When you're choosing a mattress for your child, comfort, support and suitability for the bed frame should always be considered together. For example, bunk beds, mid sleepers and high sleepers often have maximum mattress depth recommendations that must be followed for safety reasons.
Keep Children Hydrated
Warm weather increases the risk of dehydration, which can impact on sleep quality. Encourage your children to drink water regularly during the day so they stay hydrated before bedtime. Avoid large drinks immediately before sleep if they're likely to lead to night-time bathroom trips.
Accept That Some Disruption is Normal
Even with careful planning, exceptionally warm weather can still affect everyone's sleep. Children may take longer to fall asleep, wake more frequently or rise earlier than usual during a heatwave. Try not to become overly concerned by a few unsettled nights. Once the temperatures drop, sleep patterns usually recover naturally. We can't create perfect conditions every night, but we can make our children as comfortable as possible.
Helping Children Sleep Comfortably Throughout Summer
Summer brings us longer days, outdoor adventures and family activities, but it can also create challenges for us at bedtime. By focusing on breathable bedding, appropriate sleepwear, cooler bedrooms and supportive mattresses, we can help our children remain more comfortable when the temperatures rise.
We believe that creating the right sleep environment is an important part of supporting healthy rest. Small changes can make a meaningful difference, helping children enjoy more comfortable and consistent sleep throughout the warmer months.
