Our Favourite Activities for the Summer Holidays
When the school gates close and the long summer break begins, it's the perfect opportunity to spend some quality time with our little ones. At Children's Bed Shop, we know just how important it is to make the most of these weeks, whether the sun is shining or the rain is pouring. With a little planning and a sense of adventure, summer holidays can be filled with fun and special moments we'll all remember. Here are some of our favourite ways to keep the kids happy during the summer break.
Adventures in the Great Outdoors
We absolutely love getting outside during the summer. The warmer weather means there's no better time to explore local parks, nature trails or beaches. A day out doesn't need to be complicated. Sometimes all it takes is a picnic, a football and a blanket. Children are happiest when they have space to run, climb and discover new things.
If you have green space nearby, treasure hunts can be a big hit. Make a simple list of things to spot, like a pink flower, a feather or a smooth stone, and let the kids lead the way. It's a great way to get them thinking and observing their surroundings, and they love the feeling of finding everything on the list.
Creative Days at Home
Not every day can be an outing, of course. Sometimes it's nice to slow down and spend time at home. Painting, making collages or building things out of cardboard can keep children absorbed for ages. It doesn't matter if the end result is a bit messy, it's all about the process, the imagination, and the pride they feel when they've made something of their own.
On sunny days, you can take the crafts outdoors. Chalk art on the patio, sponge painting in the garden, or even a makeshift tie-dye station with old white t-shirts all go down well. It's amazing how much fun they have when they're given the freedom to get a little messy.
Learning in Disguise
Just because school is out doesn't mean learning needs to stop. It's good to to sneak in a bit of education here and there, without the kids even noticing. Simple baking sessions turn into lessons about measuring and following instructions. A nature walk can become a science lesson about insects, birds and habitats.
We also love encouraging reading over the summer. Creating a cosy reading nook in the bedroom and picking out a few new books together can help keep young minds active. Libraries often run summer reading challenges too, which adds a bit of friendly motivation.
Rainy Day Magic in the Bedroom
Let's face it, this is the UK, so we know there are bound to be rainy days during the summer. That's where the bedroom becomes a brilliant space for indoor fun. We've seen how much children enjoy turning their beds into little dens. With a few cushions, blankets and fairy lights, the space under a midsleeper or high sleeper bed can become a castle, spaceship or secret hideout. Add in a few favourite toys or books and it becomes the perfect spot for storytelling, roleplay or even a mini cinema afternoon.
Making the Most of Family Time
The best part of summer is simply spending time together without the usual rush of the school routine. It doesn't take fancy holidays or packed schedules to make memories. Whether it's watching a film together on a quiet evening, baking buns on a Sunday afternoon, or teaching them how to ride a bike, these moments are what really matter.
Even the more mundane parts of family life, like gardening or washing the car, can become quality time when done side by side. Children love being involved and feeling like they're helping out, and it gives them a sense of responsibility too.
A Summer to Remember
The summer holidays can feel long at times, especially when trying to keep little ones entertained. But with a mix of outdoor adventures, creative home days, quiet reading sessions and the occasional indoor den-building extravaganza, it's possible to strike a lovely balance.
At Children's Bed Shop, we believe that a well-designed bedroom can play a big part in this. Whether it's a space for quiet time, imaginative play or just winding down after a busy day, their bedroom can be a sanctuary throughout the holidays and beyond.
However you spend your summer, we hope it's full of laughter, discovery and the kind of memories that stay with you long after the school bell rings again.
