What is a loft bed?

Different to bunk beds, a loft bed is a raised bed that is high enough to use the space below for a different purpose. They are perfect for rooms that don’t have lots of space. You can use the space below the loft bed as a study area, a storage area or a play area.

High sleeper beds, also known as loft beds, are as versatile as they come - both fun and function wrapped into one. The ladder or stairs makes clambering into bed an exciting adventure for children, and the space created by the raised platform of the bed can be used for anything from storage, to study, to sleep. A wardrobe, a desk, or a futon bed tucked below are just three possibilities of a true wealth of options that you face.

Their space-saving ability makes single loft beds for kids an extremely popular choice. With a variety of storage options, it is easy to see why. For younger children, the space can be used for storing toys and books as well as a futon bed - ideal for sleepovers! Alternatively, the space can easily be customised to feature a desk and a wardrobe, which is perhaps better suited to teenagers. Of course, the choice is completely up to you.

How tall is a loft bed?

High sleeper or loft beds can differ in height. They can range from 165cm to 193cm. You should allow approximately 80cm distance between the mattress and the ceiling. This will provide sufficient headroom to climb into the bed.

What to put under a loft bed?

Why not get a rug, bean bag and bookshelf and turn the space into a reading corner? Or, for older children, add a desk and chair and transform the space into a study area. You can really make the most of the extra room a loft bed provides.

Are loft beds safe?

Loft beds are perfectly safe as long as you follow the safety guidelines. Use guardrails. Only allow children over the age of 6 to sleep in them. Use a night light. Don’t let children play on the bed. Don’t hang things such as belts from the bed. Use a correctly-fitting mattress.

As always, the safety of your children is one of our primary concerns here at Children’s Bed Shop and because of that concern; we would advise that high sleeper beds and loft beds are best suited for children above the age of six. If you are still wary about the height of the high sleeper beds, you might want to consider opting for a mid sleeper bed instead. They still offer great storage, but their reduced height makes them easier to ascend.
